Tom Robinson: Who is He?
Maybe I just haven't read far enough into the book to learn more about Tom the man Atticus is representing, but it seems to me for how important of a character he is becoming little information is given about him. If you have read far enough to learn more about him then please inform me. If you haven't read far enough then I ask you, what do you think he is like in person?

I think he is probably a kind person who is just getting taken advantage of. I think that he probably just unknowingly made himself an easy target for an accusation because they knew he would not be the type to go after them or take drastic measures. He just wants people to know that he is a good man.
I think he is a generally nice person, trying to disprove the whites opinion of all black. He helps without pay and listens while someone talks. He is pretty much an ideal person.
These assumptions the people who posted prior to mine were well made because of the things Calpurnia said of him in the book. She said he was a good man and wouldn't stoop to the levels hes being prosecuted for. The Reverend of First Purchase called for prayer on his behalf, and he was a church goer. The man is simply a victim of the racism that lingered for several years in the south even after the 13th amendment was ratified.
I agree with the comments above. I believe that Tom is a very nice and good man. I do think that he really is trying to protect himself and he is maybe trying to correct the whites opinions on blacks. Maybe, if he does this, he might come off alittle rude to some people. All he is doing is disagreeing with how the whites think of the blacks, and that is perfectly right in my opinion. He deserves his right to an opinion!
