Jem is Growing up so fast....

I remember when I turned twelve/thirteen. I defiantly did not act the way Jem is acting, as in considering me an adult. Do you believe Jem is acting like this because of Atticus' situation? Or do you believe that Jem is trying to prove something to everyone? Or do you think that Aunt Alexandria set him up to do that so Scout could start acting like a women? I have lots of theories on why Jem's attitude drastically changed, but I do have this to say, age has nothing to do with it. I just turned seventeen last saturday (march 17) and I still consider myself a child....what do you think is going on in Jems mind?

I think that Jem is just maturing. He is acting more responsible, and showing more respect where it is due. When Jem and Scout find Dill under the bed, Scout believes that Jem is a traitor, and has given up on his childhood when really, he was being responsible. He knew that it was nearly impossible to hid something like that from Atticus. He was just doing the right thing. Also, Jem's eyes are more open to things that Scout and Dill's aren't open to yet. The lynching mobs for instance... Jem wont leave his father's side as he faces these troubles, while Scout is oblivious to it. She talks to Mr. Walter Cunningham about his son, and school matters, as if nothing were wrong. I think that Jem is realizing that he needs to protect Scout and Dill more and more, now that Atticus has to worry about lynching mobs and such.

Princess Ariel agreed. I think Jem is just growing up and becoming more responsible, just like Princess Ariel said. Different things will open up a kid's eyes to more adult manners. Like the lynchings for instance. Jem knows the severe issues and the problems that follow these events. He is totally aware of them, and I think he is realizing now that he needs to step up to the plate, and protect Scout and Dill as much as he possibly can. Kaminous the Great, just because you just turned 17, and you still feel like a kid, doesn't mean Jem has to be in that same situation. Maybe, he has seen different things in his lifetime that you have seen in yours, that cause him to be more adult like. The lyinchings again are an example. I son't reckon you have ever seen a lynching, and if you have, I want to know about it!

Emily Osment, I understand what you are trying to say. Different types of enviroments create different responses in teen developement. Totally understood. To tell the truth, I'm awfully glad I still look at life in a view of a child. I have not seen or been through a lynching, but I have indeed seen more predicaments that most kids should not have to go through. For example, My mother has tried to kill herself about seven times that I know of in MY life time, and almost succeeded four times. My father has aids, and my family has been split for almost six years, and constantly fighting. Now, I know Jem has gone through some things that might have changed his outlook, but right at the moment, I believe it is more of an..act of notification. To show people that he his there to help, and be mature about it if he is needed.

I'm so sorry Kaminous the Great for what you have gone through. It seems like you have had a more rough time then Jem himself. I wasn't trying to be rude or sarcastic, and I totally understand now. You and Jem have gone through quite different situations, and it is awesome after going through all of those horrible things in your life, that you are able to still look at life in the view of a child. You are probably right about Jem. He is probably doing all these things as more of an act of notification than anything. I agree with you and I hope everything goes well with your family in the future. I didn't mean to come off rude in my post above! Sorry if I did! Well anyway have a nice night!

I think he is just being a normal preteen. He realizes that he doesn't feel the same way as he used to abotu things, he understands things he didn't used to, and he is also the oldest. I am the oldest in my family, and I think that it makes you mature faster because you feel you have a sort of responsibility, to be a leader...or something. I'm not sure what the right word is, but I think this makes a difference in his growing up.

I think Jem is acting so much like an adult mainly because of Atticus. As the story has been progressing especially lately Atticus seems to be around less and less. Jem probably feels like a father figure is missing and as the only “man” in the house with Atticus being gone so much and very distracted, is stepping up and taking on the role of the man in the house subconsciously. I guess another reason Jem seems to be acting so much like an adult is because of the fact he is growing up, and with that maturing. Also a lot of serious things have taken place in his life. Sometimes during life when we have to go through certain and sometimes difficult situations we automatically mature to help us get through and handle the circumstances better.

I think Jem is just maturing quickly. Jem I think understands the situation Atticus is in to some degree and feels like he has to protect Scout and Dill. I also think he really respects Atticus and wants to be like him.
